Description

There’s more to the world than most of us know. Academic wizards and gutter mages, vampires and werewolves, Men in Black working for a secret religious order and a police division investigating Fortean crimes. The cities and the very landscape encompass haunted places and lost bubbles of history, faerie courts and places of power.

But you know. You’re at the edge of the Hidden World. Maybe you’ve seen it and can’t ignore it. Maybe you’re from the Hidden World, but with ties to humanity.

Liminal is a self-contained tabletop roleplaying game about those on the boundary between the modern day United Kingdom and the Hidden World- the world of secret societies of magicians, a police division investigating Fortean crimes, fae courts, werewolf gangs, and haunted places where the walls between worlds are thin.

The players portray Liminals - those who stand between the mortal and magical realms, with ties to each. Examples of Liminals include:

  • A magician who acts as a warden to protect unaware mortals from supernatural menaces;
  • Someone of mysterious birth who is perhaps half Fae. In any case they are caught up in Faerie politics whether they like it or not;
  • A burglar who steals supernatural relics;
  • A werewolf who still has many ties to ordinary people;
  • A dhampir, striving to do good despite their vampiric infection;
  • A mortal detective who knows some of the real strangeness out there.

The magical world has a basis in British and Irish folklore and legends, along with ghost stories and modern day popular takes on the supernatural in fiction.

Sublime UK Urban Fantasy

As a devoted Call of Cthulhu player, I thought Liminal might be a bit too soft for me. I was very wrong, I got to play at a con last year and haven't looked back since. The setting is rich and draws on the breadth and depth of myth and history in the UK, the mechanics are simple, just roll two 6-sided dice against a target, usually 8 and bump it up with your skills or a Will Power spend - the simplicity really helps the group keep focused on the story whilst there is enough variety in skills and traits to flesh out an everlasting variation of characters. The standout for me is the ease with which you can pick a place in the UK, throw in a few images, google links and start creating a case, there are a wealth of factions to throw into the mix, the Sodality of the Crown, if you are a vampire lover, the Jaeger Family, if you want some werewolf action, the fae, ghosts and human groups can all add to the complexity and detail of your case. The published case notes are a great format, giving the GM plenty of scope to fill in the gaps with their own twists and with the rule book and quickstart you get three cases to get you going, perfect for one-two sessions and many only £1. The last thing to mention is the Art of Jason Behnke, it is truly wonderful and adds so much to what is already a high-quality product and one of the best urban fantasy RPGs of recent times. It's fantastic to see the continued support for this line, with so many up and coming case notes and supplements.
