Where the wealthy citizens of Rome establish holdings and homes outside major cities, they erect sprawling villas, some of them quite ornate and situated to dominate the nearby countryside, including farmlands under the control of their paterfamilias. But not all of these villas have been placed in safe regions, some out amid Germanic lands only tenuously controlled. After one’s inhabitants have been driven out by bloodshed, plague, or other disasters, they fall quickly to ruin, but often leaving behind items of wealth or clues to darker secrets.
