Once masters of Earth, the barrel-bodied Elder Things are otherworldly scientists, explorers, and voyagers possessed of formidable technology which seems like magic to the relatively primitive peoples of Earth. Most of these entities left to the stars ages ago, retreating in the face of a great clash with the Shoggoths they had created as slave labor but later grew in intelligence and cast aside former masters. Some Elder Things persist in remote regions, hibernating in hidden cities, and sometimes awakening to conduct curious experiments. They are truly alien in goals and purposes, impossible to be understood or communicated with.
