The goblin Fenya sounded calm, despite the flock of violings that swarmed eagerly around them – the nasty birds could predict bloodshed, they all knew that. Kvarek felt the sweat on his palms threaten his grip on the spear and shouted over his shoulder:
“Magdala, faster!” The witch didn’t answer, lost as he was to the sinister harmonies of the ritual, her hands caressing the pillar’s grim stone face.
A loud rumbling echoed through the ruin, as if some giant creature had awoken and stood up from under layer upon layer of stone and soil.
“The witch said that the abominations come out at night,” the goblin muttered. Kvarek’s knuckles whitened as he tightened the grip: “No, only that they are hungriest after dark. They are not afraid of the evening sun, and not of...”
He was cut short by Magdala’s hoarse voice: “The pillar has answered. I know where the mausoleum is.”
Then, out of the ruins, the Blight Beast came at them, massive and roaring. Its claws scraped the rocky ground, scouring out deep sores oozing pure corruption, leaving drops of black, mercury-like mildew on
moss and stones in its wake.
"We cannot escape this,” said Fenya. Magdala nodded agreement.
“Well then,” Kvarek sighed, “this is where we make our stand, for the right to the treasures of Symbaroum.”


Symbaroum invites you to join in the adventure! Explore the vast Forest of Davokar in the hunt for treasures, lost wisdoms and fame. Visit the barbarian clans to trade or to plunder their treasuries. Establish a base of power among princes, guilds or rebellious refugees in the capital city of Yndaros. Or survive encounters with Arch Trolls, dark-minded Blight Beasts and undead warlords. But whatever you do, never ignore the warnings spoken by the wardens of the forest: tread carefully and do not disturb the ruins of old, for the dark deep of Davokar is about to awaken.

"Järnringen has put together a gorgeous physical product. Whatever the format, the sumptuous artwork provides an impressive view into the world of Symbaroum. Many of the images using broad strokes of light and shade, imbuing the world with a brooding and somewhat indistinct atmosphere. The townscapes of Yndaros and Thistle Hold appear wreathed in obscuring mists like some pervasive corruption mirroring that of the wild and ancient lands of Davokar to the north.

For those who favour the dark, Symbaroum will be brutal. I can imagine that this game will have as many Total Party Kills as some of the classics. When I last played Advanced Dungeons & Dragons I feared for my characters life with every footfall. Those travelling the paths of darkest Davokar should do the same. 

Symbaroum follows the increasingly familiar Scandi Drama theme of dark and haunting landscapes filled with enigmatic and damaged characters in complex relationships. The simple system and rich setting, thick with dark and evocative imagery, makes this a worthy consideration for new and experienced gamers alike."

Dark, Gorgeous and Brilliant

Love this setting! The rules are good as well, although I have yet to play test them. Fantastic art throughout the book really sets the tone for the types of adventures you can expect. I like that Symbaroum focuses on a very small portion of the world - I'm sure future supplements/games will expand this, but for the moment there is more than enough to keep my players interested. A fair few typos, which are a bit disconcerting at times, no doubt will be corrected in the 2nd edition printing. Great production, well written, amazing mood-setting art, great rule set.

This is one hell of a book. The design and production is just amazing. Honestly, it's worth buying just to look at.
The setting is great: full of darkness and old evil and all the other good stuff.
The system is very cool, too. Some nice innovations and it really fits the setting.

Dark brilliance!

Symbaroum is a fantastic setting. It possesses the same dark qualities and is full of the same brooding brutality that is known from games like Warhammer FRP. Yet it's horror is entirely different. It's not as tangible, interpretable and understandable as Chaos or Evil. It is totally alien and frightening to the human core. The souls of Ambria's citizens are laid bare before it. The gaming world is yet sparcely described but already full of potential and gorgeously illustrated. The layout of the book is clear and orderly but drools background atmosphere from every page.
Above all that the real strength are the game mechanics. I always hate it when mechanics ruin a book with an otherwise fantastic setting. But Symbaroum is probably all you might want to play in the future. It's incredibly fast and efficient, easy to understand yet powerful and complex to cater to all possible situations and tastes (except for the simulationist). And it's dice-rolling convention/mechanic is pure genius although it took me three sessions to let go of the feeling that I might loose control if all rolls are made by players. This is NOT the case. And actually now I feel like being relieved of a great burden. It freed up energy that was subconciously always tied to the dice...
Symbaroum is a MUST HAVE for anyone interested in subtle horror, strong exploration/treasure hunting, intrigue and mystery adventures.

A masterpiece

I have to admit that I had no idea this game even existed until I saw advertisements on this site. I'm so glad that I found it, and got it. It is by far my favorite go to RPG for "fantasy" gaming. The rules, format, art, simply beautiful. I eagerly await other products and translations of prior books and products for this game line. I've had my share of "fantasy" rpg's, but this seriously stands out as the most impacting and memorable fantasy games I've owned. The writing and background story is amazing and the art really seals the deal. Do yourself a favor and check this title out, you won't regret it. The rules are straight forward, provide just enough rules to not overwhelm you or your table, yet it's deep enough for you to expand, customize and create amazing characters and campaigns. It's a perfect balance between story telling, gaming and collaborative creation. I've also been a huge fan of Modiphius's "Mutant Year Zero", a fantastic post apocalyptic game, again, also highly recommended. I can not stress enough how blown away i was with this title. I just wish I knew about it sooner.
