HAYWIRE MODERN: Speed, surprise, and action

Modern warfare is fast, brutal, and rarely goes according to plan. HAYWIRE MODERN was built from the ground up to capture that feeling at the tabletop level. At its core, HAYWIRE MODERN is a class-based tactical skirmish game designed for solo and co-operative play. Players control a small, highly specialized team operating in modern battlefields across the globe. Rather than focusing on large armies, the game zooms in on the boots-on-the-ground perspective, where every operator has a role, every action carries risk, and every decision shapes how a mission unfolds.

The origins of HAYWIRE MODERN come from a common experience shared by many wargamers. Traditional modern rulesets often offer deep realism and immersion, but they frequently rely on numerous roll modifiers, detailed sub-rules, and constant reference checks, all of which slow play. As hobby time becomes more limited, especially for players balancing work, family, and other responsibilities, these systems can become difficult to bring to the table regularly, especially with friends.

While some wargames include solo options, they are rarely core to the experience. From the beginning, HAYWIRE MODERN was developed from the ground up to ensure that a single player could enjoy full, dynamic, and engaging games without needing an opponent.

What is HAYWIRE MODERN?

HAYWIRE MODERN is an asymmetric game in which players command a small, highly-trained assault team that is fully aware of the enemy's presence. In contrast, the defending force begins the mission unaware and operates using simple, routine movement. Once the alert is triggered, their actions shift to behavior rules specific to each class card, which determine how they react and fight. Although opposing forces are typically less trained than the assault team, they compensate through the greater number of troops on the ground.

One of the defining features of the system is its class-driven design. HAYWIRE MODERN comes with 36 playable classes divided into 3 tiers, from special forces to militia fighters. There are classes such as the team leader, the breacher, the marksman, or the undercover operator. These classes are all divided into one of the 24 default units, but I’ll share more on that in the next blog post.

Another pillar of the game is its use of cards to make reference rules easier and add more randomness. Through the random Infil Deck or the Fog of War Events Deck, no two operations are the same. Teams may infiltrate from covert vehicles near the objective, or from crashed helicopters in the middle of the board. Missions range from intelligence gathering and sabotage to high-risk extraction operations. This variety ensures that players must constantly adapt rather than rely on a single strategy. The battlefield itself is shaped by uncertainty. The Fog of War event system introduces unpredictable events that can dramatically alter the flow of a mission. Reinforcements may arrive unexpectedly, communications may fail, or civilian presence may complicate engagement decisions. These elements are designed to simulate the chaos and friction of real operations, forcing players to react and improvise under pressure.

Beyond individual missions, HAYWIRE MODERN offers two distinct campaign experiences. The procedural campaign emphasizes replayability, generating an ongoing operational tour where teams manage resources, recover from losses, and build their base of operations. In contrast, the narrative campaign delivers a 3-chapter, story-driven experience following a multinational task force as it confronts a growing global crisis.

Ultimately, HAYWIRE MODERN is about tension, adaptability, and leading a specialized team through unpredictable operations. Plans matter, decisions have consequences, and any mission can suddenly go haywire.
