What is Cohors Cthulhu: Tactics?

By Georgie R.

Cohors Cthulhu: Tactics will be a brand new, horror-themed solo and co-op adventure wargame launching to Kickstarter at the end of this month! Roman heroes will have the chance to grow from a ragtag group of survivors to a terrifying Legion ready to test their strength against the avatars of the Outer Gods themselves in full-scale war!

The game can be played solo or cooperatively, as Chris mentioned in our previous blog, mixing the action of traditional tabletop wargames with the immersive narration of roleplaying games. While you can use whatever 28mm scale models you already have in your collection we’ll be producing a range of heroic Romans and monstrous Mythos creatures in resin, and 3D-printable STL files… There are even going to be some huge models like the Star Spawn of Cthulhu.

The Star Spawn of Cthulhu is an almighty unit that only the strongest of legions will be able to face, the sheer size and power alone might be enough to scare off most would-be fighters who come across it in battle. But for the Mythos heroes who have the strength to rise up against these cultists trying to use humanity as a means to an end, they will be ready and raring to fight against it and save their people from becoming unwilling puppets of the Outer Gods.

Chris Birch, founder of Modiphius, and James Hewitt, Necromunda and Fallout: Factions, have developed the Mendacious System used in Cohors Cthulhu: Tactics to keep things interesting as players begin their epic adventure into wargaming in ancient Rome. Fans can expect to play some challenging combat where they will need to come up with some strong tactics to best the Mythos horrors threatening to befall the same fate on Earth that Hyperborea suffered from. Carefully planning how units will move and attack will be key, especially considering that you won’t always know what will be coming to attack them through the mists of the Germanic forests.

Each turn will go through three phases where players activate their units for battle, have the enemy AI carry out their actions, and then go through the final phase of recovering units and then checking if any victory conditions have been met. The tactical nuance of the back and forth players will go through across their turns will open up new avenues for strategy as units will get stronger and players wiser with their battle tactics they use to defeat their Mythos cult enemies.

We’ll have even more miniatures to reveal as the Kickstarter progresses through stretch goals that backers can achieve throughout the campaign, be sure to keep up to date with the campaign by joining the mailing list here.
