Hello, Commander.

Today, we discuss the tactical situations you might find yourself in during XCOM: The Miniatures Game.

XCOM Operatives must be prepared to fight in a wide range of circumstances. To facilitate this, we have included no fewer than 10 standard missions, ranging from the classic UFO Crash Site mission to the brutality of the Street Fight mission.

These 10 missions recur throughout the game, but we have also included 3 story missions that unlock as you play, 5 EXALT missions that pit you against the ‘Enemy Within’, and 15 special missions, each of which puts you in a highly unusual situation, such as fending off a zombie horde or engaging in a little chemical warfare against the enemy.

What Do You Do In Missions?

The first core component is objectives. These are what you must accomplish, and they come in a wide variety. You will frequently have to secure one sector of the battlefield while a team sends a transmission from a different location, all while under fire from the alien menace!

However, the commander who only has eyes for his mission will come up short. The mission area may be littered with valuable alien resources to collect. If you want to accelerate your research and turn the tide of the war, you need every advantage. Of course, sending off a trooper to collect an alien resource might put them in the firing line and leave you with one less laser rifle to defend the objective.

Choices must be made, Commander.

What Are Discoveries?

Discoveries are points on the tactical map that can be investigated and might grant you additional benefits, such as resources or a temporary edge against the oncoming aliens... or they might be a deadly ambush as enemy reinforcements close in. Discoveries help bring the battlefield to life by adding unforeseen complications to your mission.

“We are extremely impressed with your progress thus far, Commander”

Of course, you may have friends in high places. Doing your duty for XCOM is one thing, but the Council may have something in mind for you to do on their behalf. Council Objectives are side missions that can grant powerful rewards if you manage to carry them out.

My goal in creating the mission system was to showcase a whole new level of detail in XCOM warfare, drawing on the best elements of tabletop and video gaming to make the experience as immersive and challenging as possible.
