As with the other Star Trek™ Adventures second edition supplements, the new Species Sourcebook can be adapted for use with first edition Star Trek Adventures and with the Captain’s Log solo RPG. Let’s discuss using the new book’s content with each game!

For species introduced to canon after first edition ended, or species that weren’t included there, most of the content in the Species Sourcebook (including the lore, sample values, attribute modifiers, species traits, and names) can be directly transferred over without modification. You can change the species ability into a species talent for first edition, and choose whether to make it a mandatory talent or an optional talent along with the other species talents included in the Species Sourcebook.

In this way, you should be able to easily bring in Breen, Brikar, Bynar, Chameloid, Lurian, Horta, Illyrian, Jem’Hadar, Kellerun, and more into your first edition games.

For Captain’s Log solo RPG players, it’s even easier to transport in second edition species, since Captain’s Log does not use character talents. Simply ignore the species abilities and talents contained in the Species Sourcebook (unless you want to use them, or at least use them to influence the choices you make during a given mission). The attribute modifiers remain the same, and the species trait doesn’t change; you can use those exactly as written.

The various complication tables contained in the Species Sourcebook are closely related to the probability matrices in Captain’s Log and effortlessly port over should you choose to use them for specific situations or adapt them for use in your ongoing story. And, of course, all the non-mechanical lore, sidebars, and advice contained in the new sourcebook are applicable and usable in any form of Star Trek role-playing you and your crew may engage in.

Which species are you planning to use in your first edition games? What new Captain’s Log characters will you create based on the new material provided? Share your ideas and insights with your fellow Star Trek fans at the official Modiphius Discord!
