If you’ve been watching Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, you may have wondered how to represent the new characters in Star Trek Adventures. The new series presents an array of characters representing new species as well as new mixed-heritage characters, all of which can be realized in the game with a combination of the core rulebook, the forthcoming Species Sourcebook, and a little creativity.
Let’s take a look at the cast of characters and briefly note how you might go about creating them or similar in the game. Note that all references to ‘core rulebook’ are for the second edition core rulebook.
-
CHANCELLOR NAHLA AKE: Ake is a Human-Lanthanite hybrid, and appears to have similar characteristics to the other known Lanthanite, being Commander Pelia from Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Humans are detailed in the core rulebook, while Lanthanites are in the Species Sourcebook.
-
CADET MASTER LURA THOK: Thok is the first instance we’ve seen of a feminine Jem’Hadar, and the first instance we’ve seen of a Jem’Hadar-Klingon hybrid. She gets the best of both species, a powerful and intimidating combination. Klingons are covered in the core rulebook, while Jem’Hadar are in the Species Sourcebook. First edition includes Klingons in the Beta Quadrant Sourcebook and The Klingon Empire core rulebook.
-
CALEB MIR: Caleb is a Human, a species detailed in the core rulebook.
-
DAREM REYMI: Darem is Khionian, a new species not yet covered in the game system. This would be a great place to use the new species creation rules presented in the Species Sourcebook, and either adapting existing species abilities and species talents, or creating your own based on what we know of the character and his species from the series.
-
GENESIS LYTHE: Genesis is also a member of a species new to the franchise, the Dar-Sha. She’s noted as being a hybrid, but what the second species might be is, as yet, speculation. She’d be another candidate for using the species creation rules presented in the Species Sourcebook.
-
JAY-DEN KRAAG: Jay-Den is a Klingon, which are detailed in the core rulebook (see above for first edition references). Given the circumstances around 32nd century era Klingons, his lifepath choices are likely different than those of a 23rd or 24th century Klingon.
-
SERIES ACCLIMATION MIL (SAM): SAM is a photonic being, like the Doctor from Star Trek: Voyager. Photonic beings (holograms) are detailed in the Species Sourcebook.
-
TAMINA SADAL: Tamina is Betazoid, and a powerful telepath. Betazoids are covered in the core rulebook, and her particularly powerful abilities could be covered by creating a new talent and/or traits (including one for her implanted inhibitor).
-
OCAM SADAL: Ocam is Betazoid and full of empathy, though he has yet to display any evidence of other Betazoid abilities such as telepathy. Betazoids are detailed in the core rulebook.
- CASHEW BASKET: The second Exocomp we’ve seen in the universe, like Star Trek: Lower Decks’s Peanut Hamper, is easily represented by the Exocomp species as found in the Species Sourcebook. First edition included the Exocomps in the Star Trek: Lower Decks Campaign Guide.
There are many more cadets presented on screen, of course, most of which are as yet unnamed and undefined beyond their physical appearances. Perhaps future episodes will provide more details on them. There are countless ways you could represent them in the game until more is revealed about them on screen.
