The first edition of Fallout: Wasteland Warfare had a variety of options to rival the source material. If you wanted to live your Wasteland dreams of having Preston Garvey in Cappy Glasses and sporting a snazzy Cowboy Repeater, you could!

Anyone from the lowest Raider could be scaled up into a hero, complete with all sorts of additional upgrade cards.

The second edition has seen a scaling down of those options, at least at the start. Rest assured that your characters can change and grow. However the focus is very much on the growth your player character would see in the Fallout video games themselves.

You don’t dropkick your way out of the Vault all singing all dancing in the video games. That is the same in Fallout: Wasteland Warfare now too. You can get all the toys, but you need to work for them!

How to Build a Hero

The process for building a hero at the start of a campaign is as easy as apple pie. Ahead of building the hero, you would have picked a faction to pull your crew from. In the core rulebook, this’ll be one of Survivors, Super Mutants, Raiders and Brotherhood of Steel. This will determine your hero options - unlike in first edition, the denizens of the Wasteland generally do not mix or play well together!

This’ll give you a S.P.E.C.I.A.L. profile and Perks. The only other choice you’ll have at this stage is what equipment to give your hero. Write all of these down on your warband roster and that’s your hero done!

Don’t worry for those wanting something more customisable, the Into the Wasteland supplement has full rules for playing custom heroes, including those currently unaligned with a faction.

A great individual ain’t gonna last long without a team of friends/meatshields (delete as appropriate) around them. We are going to need some more models. How many models you can have in your crew is determined by your Hero’s Fame.

To start with, this is equal to their Charisma and is a representation of how well known they are. The more folks know about you, the more of those folks you can get to join. At the beginning, your Fame may only be enough to bring along a few farmers and their pet dog but as time goes on, all sorts of people will flock to your banner!

Getting out there and getting things done is a great way to increase your Fame. Completing Quests is a great way to attract better models onto your Crew Roster. Or perhaps you’ll just use your Fame to hire lots of expendable models. For Factions like Raiders, that is their go-to gameplan!

Playing Named Characters

Named characters were a huge part of Fallout: Wasteland Warfare first edition. They are still about in the new version of the game, although it will be in different forms depending on the character. Legate Lanius is a different breed to Butch Delorias, after all. All shall be revealed…
