You’ve heard the news, Wastelanders. If not, where have you been?! Fallout: Wasteland Warfare has a new edition hot off the presses. We’ve got an entire blog series covering the changes between editions in detail, but if you want the highlights, or just a place to send those who are curious, this is the spot for you.

Let's get started!

What are the Big Differences Between Fallout: Wasteland Warfare’s Editions?

There’s much to love about Fallout: Wasteland Warfare, and the second edition embraces all of the best bits of it. Built by designers who loved the original game, and honouring the feedback over the years, what emerged is a streamlined game, approachable to seasoned and brand new players alike, and one that is a whole lot of fun. But what differences will you notice first?

1. Second Edition is Solo-Play First

The first edition of Fallout: Wasteland Warfare covered every possible way to play in the ravaged ruins of America. From Player Vs. Player to roleplay game variants, it was all there!

The second edition is made from the ground up, first and foremost with solo play in mind.

This has allowed for a whole host of innovations to the system, which in turn mean the variation players loved from the first edition can happen organically.

If you’re a grizzled first edition Battle Mode enjoyer, not to worry! There is Battle Mode support in the Core Rulebook of the new edition (and more modes yet still) for players who want to knock the caps out of their friends.

2. There are Fewer Components

Gaming spaces for the first edition of Fallout: Wasteland Warfare got very busy, very quickly. Different tokens and markers scattered across the battlefield. Numerous cards representing one model and all of their equipment, along with decks of cards representing the Wild Wasteland one would be gaming in, took up a fair amount of space.

We acknowledge that this collecting aspect had its fans, but could easily be a barrier to entry for others.

Second edition changes this by cutting down on the number of tokens, and replacing cards with a roster that you can fill in yourself as your band of Wastelanders change and grow. Second edition has also removed a few of the dice from the gameplay loop, making it easier than ever to get to the fun bits.

3. The AI System has Been Simplified

We’ve just talked about the first edition requiring a lot of cards, and part of the reason for that was down to the game’s detailed AI system. While it worked well, it required a lot of admin to enjoy, and with the second edition we sought to retain the flavour of the originality, without the complexity of the original AI.

Being a solo game first, second edition still retains its AI system but it is much more streamlined. Using a handful of universal behaviors to govern what the enemies do, players can now spend less time moving the baddies around, and instead focus on how they can draw them into fiendishly clever traps with their warband!

Can You Play 2nd Edition Fallout: Wasteland Warfare if You Loved the Original?

Absolutely!

If you are a fan of the first edition, don't worry! A number of the hallmarks from the game you love are still here. Battle Cry makes its return, along with the joy of customising the loadouts for your Wasteland warriors. This is in addition to brand new mechanics, such as the long awaited implementation of Stealth.

There’s plenty to love about the exciting new edition, and so there truly is no better time to head off into the Wasteland! Pre-order a Fallout: Wasteland Warfare Starter Set today. Got more questions? Grab a (Nuka) cola and come and join us on our Discord.
