The Star Trek Adventures second edition core rulebook is now available in print and digital formats. To support the game’s launch, we’re using the next several weeks of STA-related blogs to provide more detail on each of the playable character species presented in the core rulebook. Perhaps the information provided in these brief travelogues will help to arm you with ideas and inspiration on what species you might want to use for your character.

ANDORIA

Planetary Background

The icy white-blue of the gas giant Andor is magnificent to behold. Dare not conflate it with the actual home of the Andorians and Aenar, though, or you’ll likely get a sharp correction from the natives! In actuality, Andoria is the moon that orbits this beautiful, ringed planet.

Found at the very borders of the inhabitable zone of this binary star system, Andoria is famous for its stark, icy landscapes. You might expect that nothing could live on such a harsh, freezing place, and yet life still thrives. Beneath its barren surface, great cities sprawl and civilizations grow. The Andorians (see page 100 of the second edition core rulebook) are long-time allies of humanity, predating even the formation of the United Federation of Planets.

The Aenar (page 101 of the second edition core rulebook), on the other hand, have generally avoided the galactic spotlight and prefer to live in isolated settlements on Andoria. Some have chosen to leave their homeworld, however, and use their innate telepathic talents to navigate the Galaxy around them.

Why You Should Play

The moon’s harsh climate breeds sharpness—both in mind and body. If your character is (or grew up with) an Andorian or Aenar, cold temperatures would likely have far less of an impact on them than on others off-planet. They have likely learned the importance of the ice mining tool, the ushaan-tor, as well. A life of navigating underground ice caverns and vent-lakes would give them a different view of what is beauty—and what the open spaces of the sky means to them.

Maybe the Andorian robust sense of honor and passion rubbed off on your character, leaving them with a strict personal code of conduct. Such a character might find themselves with a higher Control or Daring. Perhaps being raised around more aggressive Andorians led them to a life of militaristic training. Such a skilled fighter would certainly have a notable rating in Fitness, or even a Presence rating that might surprise others of their biological species.

Most Aenar are born blind, though all have telepathic abilities they use to augment and complement their other senses, which means they are likely to have high Control and Insight ratings. Most are pacifists by choice, which, coupled with their telepathy means they’re likely to favor Reason and Presence as well.
