Description

During the great apocalypse, humanity fled to the depths of the underground enclaves. In genetic laboratories, researchers tried to breed a new being, splicing human and animal DNA, creating a beast intelligent yet strong enough to survive in the devastated world. The enclaves have fallen - but the animals’ fight for freedom has only just begun.

Fun System with a Fascinating Setting

The mechanics of Genlab Alpha (and Mutant Year Zero) are fun and fairly simple. They capture the mood of the setting quite well, and are easy to teach. They give players meaningful choices about when to push their luck and accept some risk for better odds of success. Combat and damage are likewise simple but allow some fun choices to make mechanically.

Like Mutant Year Zero, the game also has a strategic level of play that is fun and provides inspiration for stories to tell in the game. The strategic rules also capture the tone of this particular setting very well.

In Genlab Alpha you play mutant animals that are oppressed by the Watchers, uncaring robotic overlords. The default storyline is a great one, where the player’s animals join the Resistance to free themselves from the Watchers. Over the course of the game, the players rally the various tribes and learn the secret of their past. It is very fun!

I’m currently playing the game with my family (spouse, 17 year old, 15 year old, and 11 year old). I’d be happy to play it again with a group of friend to see how the story was different. The game provides enough guidance to tell a cool story with enough flexibility to make it your own.

Great game!
