Hello, Commander.
As you complete each mission in XCOM: The Miniatures Game, you will be developing the future of the organisation’s combat capabilities in the post-battle campaign sequence. Let’s take a look!
What Happens When A Mission Doesn’t Go Well?
Every campaign turn, you assess the consequences of facing the aliens. If a mission went poorly or too many civilian lives were lost, the Morale of the Council may drop as they lose faith in your ability to conduct the program. Should Morale drop to 0, your campaign comes to an end.
You must also contend with your own casualties. Soldiers who fall during battle may be permanent casualties or require recovery in sick bay before they can take to the field again. Of course, you might also lose precious equipment in battle (turns out having giant holes blasted in your armour is not covered by the warranty!)
How Do Your XCOM Operatives Level Up?
While battle is a harsh mistress, she is also an excellent teacher. After each mission, your surviving XCOM Operatives gain in both fighting ability and courage. They may also receive a promotion, which will improve their abilities further! A Captain, for example, has superior command range to the humble Corporal, not to mention the ability to gain further advances from experience.

What Are The Benefits Of Research?
The most exciting thing may well be the fruits of your Research. Your scientists ceaselessly work to develop new weapons and equipment, which is then sent off to be manufactured. Choices must be made: Alien resources found during battle can boost research, but when time is short, you must prioritise what you need the most, whether that’s upgrades to your firepower, new types of armour, or something else entirely.
At the bleeding edge of research lies the really juicy stuff: genetically enhanced troopers, psionics, and the fearsome cybernetic MEC troopers. To enhance your squad with these powerful units, you must expand your base with specialist facilities before you can start the required research.
All the while, the sinister EXALT organisation lurks in the shadows, waiting for their time to strike… but that’s for another time.
