As of the writing of this blog post, broadcast Star Trek™ is heading into uncertain times. Once the next 16 episodes of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and the next 10 episodes of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy are released, there may not be new Star Trek episodes or feature films to enjoy for some time to come.

What can you do to keep the spirit of Star Trek alive with your friends and fellow gamers? You might want to consider starting a new Star Trek Adventures campaign, or continuing with your current campaign!

Some of the advantages of starting or continuing a campaign include:

  • A STORY OF YOUR OWN: The genesis and progression of your campaign is entirely up to you and your group. Every player in your group can be a producer and writer of the campaign and should feel empowered to contribute as much as they want to the ongoing story your group unfolds.
  • LIMITLESS BUDGET: Unlike television series or feature films, your RPG missions and campaigns cost nothing to create, except perhaps some time to prepare sessions and create or maintain your characters. You and your group can imagine and create magnificent vistas, complex alien species, and Star Trek-style situations at the game table together without having to spend any money.
  • NOT SUBJECT TO CANCELLATION: Your campaign isn’t subject to the orders of accountants or network executives, and cannot be cancelled unless the gamemaster or group decides to bring it to an end. While many RPG campaigns tend to last a year or two, some groups play the same campaign in one form or another for many years.
  • SUBJECT MATTER OF YOUR CHOICE: Feel like broadcast Star Trek focuses on too many political or social messages? Feel like they don’t focus enough on political and social matters? Talk with your group, set your campaign themes and tones, and figure out what you want to explore together.
  • YOUR OWN CANON: While Star Trek Adventures adheres to established Star Trek canon, you and your group are free to discuss what is canon for your campaign. Don’t like a particular movie, series, or episode? Write it out of existence for your campaign. Don’t like the choices a given character made on-screen? Change it to suit your purposes. Make the Star Trek universe your own.

What other advantages does an RPG have over broadcast television series and motion pictures? How are you planning to keep the Star Trek spirit alive with your group (or with a new group)? What stories have you wanted Star Trek to tell that they haven’t yet, and you’re looking to make them happen at the game table? Share your ideas and experiences with your fellow Star Trek fans at the official Modiphius Discord.

For my sake, once I get a couple big projects off my plate, I’m looking at running a miniseries, though I have about a dozen campaign hooks I need to sort through and select. Fortunately, after 60 years and innumerable stories, the Star Trek universe is a fertile ground for making great stories and great memories.

Thanks for reading this article, and thank you for your interest and support of Star Trek Adventures! Keep frequencies open for news about other upcoming Star Trek Adventures product releases. Live long and prosper!
