Fallout: Wasteland Warfare has become a solo-first game in its second edition, but we didn’t want to neglect those of the community who enjoy playing in other ways. That led to several alternate game modes in the core rulebook (with more to come in future expansions), and today, we’re going to take a look at Battle Mode.

Competitive Fallout: Wasteland Warfare - Battle Mode

In the first edition our amazing community came together to make and keep up to date battle mode, a competitive version of the game that helped balance things a little.

Their enthusiasm drove the development of the game, and to honor their contributions we’ve named our main versus game mode Battle Mode.

Battle Mode turns Fallout: Wasteland Warfare into a tense tactical game of Wasteland combat.

Now, Fallout: Factions is our premier versus game, so we didn’t want to tread on its toes. And, if you want a versus campaign game, then that’s the thing to look at.

But for Battle Mode, we weren’t interested in creating tightly balanced curated lists of models and equipment - instead the focus was on letting you build whatever wild lists you fancied and crashing them together.

Play Battle Mode

When you decide to play Battle Mode in Fallout: Wasteland Warfare with a friend you have two choices: either you create warbands for the game specifically, or you take your solo campaign mode warbands and see how they fare against each other.

If you’re building a warband from scratch you’ll both agree on a game size (which increases the number of models you can take and the battlefield size) and the warband power (which increases the level of your hero and companions).

You’ll then recruit a warband up to a fame limit, before levelling them up as per the warband power chosen and equipping everyone from what’s available within a certain limit of caps.

By default all of your models will be from a single faction, but if you and your opponent agree you can draw on models from across any faction you like!

If you’re playing with your campaign warbands, you’ll work out how powerful they are compared to each other, and the underdog will get a few extras to make things a little more even.

With that done, you can play! Some of the rules aren’t used (like those for Threat, Priority and stealth), but mostly the game runs just as it does when you’re playing solo. There are four scenarios included in the core rules for Battle Mode, but the only limit is your imagination!

Get out there and get battling!
