Broader Series Representation

Broader Series Representation

One of the things I’m excited for with the release of the new Star Trek™ Adventures Species Sourcebook is that we were able to add more than 60 new species to second edition pulled from all across the Star Trek universe, deepening the representation in the game.

The core rulebook contained 14 species, representing some of the most well-known and beloved from a few key series (primarily the original series, The Next Generation, and Deep Space Nine). What about many of the fascinating species from other series and movies?

With a whole book to dedicate to new alien species, 2d20 System developer Nathan Dowdell and I compiled and then worked our way through a long list of species for inclusion, and eventually narrowed it down to the 60 in the book (61 if you include the Novolare, an Aurelian sub-species).

With 74 species now officially available in second edition, let’s review the representation available by series (listed with their first significant presence):

  • STAR TREK: ENTERPRISE: Aenar, Denobulan, Rigellian Jelna, Orion, and five Xindi species
  • STAR TREK: DISCOVERY: Betelgeusian, Kelpien, Kwejian, Osnullus, Saurian, Xahean
  • STAR TREK: STRANGE NEW WORLDS: Illyrian, Lanthanite
  • STAR TREK (the original series): Andorian, Horta, Human, Klingon QuchHa’, Romulan, Tellarite, Terran, Vulcan
  • STAR TREK: THE ANIMATED SERIES: Aurelian, Blue Orion, Caitian, Edosian, Kzinti
  • STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION: Android, Barzan, Benzite, Betazoid, Bolian, Bynar, Child of Tama, El-Aurian, Ferengi, Hologram, Ktarian, Liberated Borg, Nausicaan, Pakled, Risian, Zakdorn
  • STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE: Bajoran, Breen, Cardassian, Changeling, Grazerite, Jem’Hadar, Kellerun, Lurian, Trill, Vorta, Yridian
  • STAR TREK: VOYAGER: Ocampa, Talaxian
  • STAR TREK: LOWER DECKS: Cetacean, Exocomp, Klowahkan
  • STAR TREK: PRODIGY: Brikar, Medusan, Vau N’Akat
  • STAR TREK MOTION PICTURES: Chameloid, Deltan, Efrosian, Human Augment, Klingon, Reman, Rigellian Chelon, Son’a
  • STAR TREK: SECTION 31: Nanokin

We’ve covered a lot of ground, and even then, there’s room to grow! The First edition included many additional species, and you can look forward to 1e to 2e conversion documents for the species contained in the Alpha, Beta, Gamma, and Delta Quadrant Sourcebooks that weren’t included in the Species Sourcebook.

The active Star Trek productions, Strange New Worlds and Starfleet Academy, are adding even more species and combinations of species to the Star Trek universe. Using the character generation rules contained in Chapter 1.3 of the Species Sourcebook along with the wide variety of species abilities and talents now available, you should be able to create virtually any Star Trek character seen on screen, not to mention any character you or your players can imagine.

Which species are you and your group planning to use in your next game? Which Star Trek species are you planning to create using the mechanics and tools now available to you? What original species are you excited to create and play? Tell us all about it on the official Modiphius Discord!
