Using the Starter Set with Published Adventures

If you and your group have picked up the Star Trek Adventures second edition Starter Set and have played through it, or perhaps are nearing the end of it, you may be thinking about what comes next or how you could take the contents of the Starter Set and use them to tell additional stories set in the Star Trek™ universe.

Aside from combining with Captain’s Log, which we discussed previously, you could combine the Starter Set with any of the hundreds of published stories available in the Star Trek Adventures line. This robust game is now 9 years old and includes well over 100 standalone adventures and 300+ single page mission briefs that can be used as adventure starters or outlines for full-length adventures. That is an incredible wealth of content to use in conjunction with just the Starter Set to continue the stories of your crew on board the U.S.S. Challenger.

As long as your group is comfortable not making use of the character development or advancement rules contained in the core rulebook, rules for supporting characters, or options for character and starship talents and special rules, you can use the Starter Set as a launching point into the wide wealth of material available in the Star Trek Adventures game line.

Most of the standalone adventures were written with a notional era of play. Each one can easily be adapted for use in other eras of play by swapping out the main adversaries as needed, and adapting the storyline if needed to match the era of play. In most cases, however, the standalone adventures can be run largely as written or adapted for use in your game.

While most of the standalone adventures were written for first edition rules, all of the mission briefs are edition agnostic, and include no mechanics to revise or change. While the page references in the mission briefs to NPC stat blocks reference the first edition core rulebook, most of those stat blocks were revised and included in the second edition core rulebook. It should be a simple matter to find the same or similar stat blocks.

The various first edition printed adventures require minor conversion work, but, because second edition is very similar to first edition, you should have no difficulty adapting existing stat blocks, weapon damage ratings, extended tasks, and other mechanical elements and drop them right into your second edition game. Guidance for adapting first edition to second edition can be found in this blog post.

in addition to the many standalone adventures, there are three-part campaigns available in the first edition Starter Set (campaign also available by itself), the Tricorder collector’s set (the campaign is also available by itself), the Lower Decks Campaign Guide, and the Star Trek: Discovery (2256–2258) Campaign Guide. There are also longer campaigns contained in The Federation-Klingon War Tactical Campaign (six parts plus 24 mission briefs) and the Shackleton Expanse Campaign Guide (10 parts plus 46 mission briefs).

In short, if you and your group are willing to take a few minutes to make some minor conversions in stat blocks from first edition to second edition, and make use of the mission brief format, there are hundreds of published stories ready for you to adapt right now for use with your Starter Set to add entire campaigns’ worth of stories for your crew to enjoy. Just imagine the possibilities!
